How to Care for Your Skin After a Surgical Procedure

After skin surgery, you’ll be given an aftercare leaflet tailored to your specific procedure. Proper post-operative skin care is essential for optimal healing and the best cosmetic result. While individual instructions may vary, here are the general principles I recommend to my patients.

Cleaning

  • Begin gentle wound cleaning 24-48 hours after surgery.

  • Use mild soap and cool water- avoid harsh cleansers or scrubbing.

  • Moisturise the wound with a thin layer of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or the prescribed antibiotic ointment (if given).

  • Why? Keeping the wound moist prevents scab formation and promotes faster healing. The common belief that wounds should be kept dry is outdated.

Dressings

  • Initial dressing: Leave in place for 24-48 hours, or as advised.

  • Changing the dressing: After removing the initial dressing you can reapply a fresh dressing daily — or sooner if it becomes wet or dirty.

Swelling & Discomfort

  • Some swelling and bruising is normal in the first few days.

  • For pain, use paracetamol. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and other NSAIDs unless advised, as they may increase bleeding risk.

  • Avoid strenuous activities for 1-2 weeks, depending on the surgical site.

When to Contact Your Doctor

Seek medical advice if you notice:

  • Increasing redness, warmth, or swelling.

  • Discharge or bleeding that doesn’t stop with gentle pressure.

  • Fever or chills.

Scar Care (Once the wound has fully healed)

  • Sun protection: Apply SPF 50 daily to prevent the scar from darkening.

  • Silicone products: Gel sheets or silicone-based creams can help improve the scar over time.

  • Massage: Once healed, gently massage the scar for a few minutes daily to improve texture and appearance.

Post-Surgical Skin Care: Do’s & Don’t’s

✔ Do:

  • Keep the wound clean with mild soap and cool water after 24-28 hours.

  • Apply petroleum jelly or prescribed ointment to keep it moist.

  • Change dressings daily or when wet/dirty.

  • Use SPF 50 on healed scars to prevent darkening.

  • Use silicone gel or sheets to help soften scars.

✖ Don’t:

  • Let the wound dry out or form thick scabs.

  • Pick at the wound.

  • Use harsh cleansers or alcohol.

  • Do strenuous activities.

  • Take aspirin or ibuprofen immediately after surgery (unless prescribed).

Key takeaway: Following wound care instructions carefully and keeping the area clean, moist, and protected, will help ensure your skin heals quickly and with the best cosmetic result possible.
